As I looked out across my armies, I could not believe my eyes... the light of the sun was blotted by the a thickness of hawks and owls, all screeching. In the darkness I could only just make out the forms of my soldiers, vainly fighting against the strangest array of beasts I had every come across. Mighty stags ran down my cavalry. Raging bears tore their way through my ranks. As I rose my hand to give an order, a lynx came out of nowhere and bit me so deep, I thought I might die from the loss of blood alone.

The afternoon went into the evening before I realized the inevitable... I took what troops of mine were left and retreated from that place, steeped as it was in Elven magics. I left that castle to the ranger, but not for long. It took me only a fortnight to empty my coffers and rebuild my army, this time with the best mercenaries money could by. I rode with pride to the place where my castle once stood, my heart swelling to see my ranks so strong...

Only to find that the Hunt Mistress Jawagoo has not only retreated into the safety of the Forest, but had taken her entire kingdom with her! From the border thick dark trees, foreboding trees, were all that could be seen. I knew then that I would not have my chance for vengeance until at least the Spring. Cursing the Forest Gods under my breath, I turned my army around and went home.

Ranger

Wilderness warriors and friends to the Elves, the Ranger strikes a precarious balance. On the one hand, like the honourless Barbarians, they live outside the cities, among the trees which they so love. It is a rough life, which makes the Ranger hard and ready for the strife of Conquest. On the other hand, unlike the honourless Barbarians, Rangers live with the Code of honour set down by the Emperors. Rangers do not owe fealty to the Emperors by birth, they are not themselves Norman or Saxon or Gaelic, but by choice. As such, they are some of the staunchest defenders of the Realm.

A Ranger is at home most in the wilderness between the cities. Therefore, when a Ranger travels, it costs him half of what a Fighter would pay. Rangers are never robbed, as they do not take the highways, and they enter or leave locked cities as they please, as they do not use the gates.

Rangers are not completely trusted by, or trusting of, their city-dwelling brethren. Therefore they may ally, but only with another Ranger. Rangers have little use for material goods, and therefore donate copper, in excess of ??? per level, to the Church.

Most miraculously, Rangers are very close to all of Elvenkind, including many fantastic magical creatures of the forest. Many of these creatures serve them in the army, but the Ranger also learns strange mystical abilities himself.

Due to their natures, Rangers hold fewer lands than other classes. They do not, for the most part, hold sway over large kingdoms, but rather house their armies among the wild undergrowth... here and there, and eventually, everywhere. Therefore, Rangers have lower promotion requirements than other classes. Moreover, they must only reach level 7 to abdicate and gain an experience level

Troops

A ranger may house 75 troops per castle.

Scouts(1/2)
Nothing more than peasants eager to take arms for their Lord, Scouts may be enlist'ed from the ranks of the peasantry. In turn, through horrible magics taught by the ancient Treant, Scouts may be turned into the half-horse Centaurs, after only a little bit of train'ing.

Centaurs(3/4)
Truly devoted to the Way of the Forest, these warriors have been turned into half-horse monsters with ancient Forest magics. They are the ultimate cavalry: they are obsessively loyal, they have ultimate control over their mounts, and they cannot be unhorsed...

Master Archer(5/5 fs, x2)
Trained by the Elves, these bowmen are the best on the Three Continents. Armed not only with stout bows, but short swords as well, they know well when to hide and when to attack. They come from every direction, and never lose sight of their enemies.

Treant(2/10, swarm)
The noble Treant refer to themselves as the Shepards of the Trees. Ancient and commanding, they are trees come to life, and with the power to awaken their brethren. They are slow, but when an entire forest can be awakened to attack, there is little escape.

Bloodguards(10/12)
Trained from birth to be the elite bodyguards of the Emperors themselves, the enigmatic bloodguard serve the most honourable warriors in the realms with their staunch magical steel.

Battering Ram(2/0)
Crude, but effective... if only barely. The Battering Ram is simply a tree, cut down and hewn of it's branches.

Mercenaries
Blade Dancer(4/7,x3)
These Elven warriors hold the vaunted secrets of the Blade Dance, a discipline equally art and combat. They will teach no one this unstoppable martial art, but then, it takes at least 300 years to learn, anyway.

Wyvern(10/10, fs, swarm)
The forest-dwelling cousin to the mountain-dwelling Firedrake, these Dragons are known for sleeping away centuries, but when they are awakened they fight with tooth, nail and fire. Flocks of wyverns are among the most dangerous troops in existence, as the consume, destroy and burn everything in their path.
